Years ago, I was on my way out on an errand.  As I drove my truck down the driveway I couldnt help but notice a man kneeling on the other side of our fence.  He was kneeling there with his head to the ground.  As I got out of my truck I watched him, he wasnt moving.

So I approached him and called out, "Sir are you alright?"
He didnt answer the first time and so I came nearer to him and called again, "Sir?"
This time, the man sat up and looked back at me smiling.
He assured me and simply said "I'm fine, I was praying." he smiled again and went on to say, " I set out to pick up the debris along the fence that the wind had blown there. Figured you might like to see it cleaned up".

I was overcome by his kindness and by his kneeling there in prayer out in the open under the blue sky that day.  I was inspired by it.  Awed by it.   I thanked him and praised God with him, that he was praying there.  But I had to go, or I was going to be late to where I was going.  I looked back as I drove away..and he returned his face to the ground in prayer right out in the open under that big blue sky.

When I came back, I didnt expect to see the man still kneeling there.  It had been about half an hour since I left.  But there he was.  Still in the prayer position, under the gorgeous blue heaven, right next to my driveway on the other side of the fence, where I left him.

I decided this time to move the truck as quietly by him as I could, so as to not disturb his prayer.
And while I went about the daily routine of making dinner and taking care of the kids about 40 mins went by and my thoughts went back to the man outside.  I looked out the window to see if he was still there.  I saw was the man's son standing over him, asking if he was ok.  He didnt respond.  And paramedics were called.  I stood out there with his son.  His son told me, he had just checked on his father minutes earlier and was told the same thing, that he was fine and was praying.  He died there praying on his knees, head down to the ground.

I will never forget the man.   Because of the kindness he showed to me, he made a profound impact on my life.  One of his last acts on earth was to love his neighbor as himself.  He did.

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
